Kwando Camp Accommodation
Kwando Camp offers different accommodations.
RECEPTION
You will be greeted there when reaching the lodge. Next to the telephone
available to our clients, a curio shop offering locally made artecraft.
ISLAND TENTS
The island accommodates eight thatched tents, each one with two
beds. Every bed is equipped with a mosquito net. Built on poles
with a terrace overlooking the river, these bungalows will allow
you to do some fishing from the deck…
The thatched roofs guarantee a good thermal regulation, that is,
not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Every
tent has an en suite bathroom with shower, a toilet and a basin
with hot and cold water. These are open sky bathrooms that will
allow you to enjoy the surrounding nature…
Furthermore there are 3 large Bungalows that are built on poles
and on higher ground; made of wood canvas and thatched roofs. They
are conveniently placed in the middle of the trees, allowing for
an incredible view on the Botswana plains. Each Bungalow has a large
bedroom, stylish furnished, a large en-suite bathroom as well as
a terrace.
Electricity is provided at key time by a generator. Bathrooms
are lit by way of paraffin lights.
CAMP SITE
Situated between the main building and the island. Its surface is
covered by trees which provide shade during the hotter hours of
the day. It allows for about ten camping spots on a carefully maintained
lawn. The facilities provide with showers, toilets and basins, as
well as places to do your laundry. Hot and cold water is provided.
TREE HOUSES
Three larger bungalows are also available on higher ground, built
on high poles, made of wood and canvas, along with thatched roofs.
Conveniently placed in the middle of the trees, they allow for an
incredible view on the Botswana plains.
Each bungalow has a large bedroom, stylishly furnished; a large
en-suite bathroom as well as an expanding terrace.
SWIMMING POOL
When the excitement of the bush wanes, between game drives and swamp
boat trips, our swimming pool is there for you, close to the tents
and the island, filtered and cleaned to the standards you may expect.
Around it, you will relax in the shady area, where long chairs are
conveniently placed on the grass garden.
Restaurant and Bars
The restaurant and bar are open for all guests staying there. The
dining room opens to the River offering wonderful views of the hippos
and crocodiles passing by.
BAR
This welcoming place is open to the clients of the lodge as well
as of the camp site. You can enjoy a chat at the bar, or use the
tables around to play cards or finish some pending work...
DINING ROOM
Our roomy dining room, open on its riverside flank, can accommodate
up to a party of thirty, from where you can keep an eye on the passing
fauna of crocodiles and hippos while enjoying lunch or dinner.
Our chef and his staff will do everything possible to accommodate
our guests and shall be serving lunch and dinner with a set menu
as well as a large breakfast buffet.
CURIO SHOP
A small curio shop has been opened in front of the reception area
for your convenience. There, you shall find a vast display of locally
crafted articles from the Caprivi region, books covering a variety
of topics related to the African fauna and flora. There is a choice
of shirts and caps which carry the Camp Kwando logo as well as a
variety of other articles which may come useful to the traveller,
such as toiletries, films and batteries.
The shop is open in the morning, as well as in the late afternoon.
Activities from Kwando Camp
BOAT TRIPS
Our lodge has its own flat bottom aluminium boat that can take up
to fourteen persons for trips on the Kwando river. Our boat also
has a canvas roof to protect you from the sun. We also run a smaller
boat for smaller parties or fishing trips. As for the game drives,
the boats leave early morning or late in the afternoon, to make
the best possible use of light for your pictures, and the time of
highest wildlife activity.
GAME DRIVE
Our specially equipped ten seater Land Rover will allow comfortable
drives in the neighbouring parks, under the protection of its canvas
roof. “On request” game drives leave early in the morning
and late afternoon, usually to Mudumu Game Park, and include a relaxing
break where drinks and snacks shall be served.
On request, we can organise a trip of two or more days to the Caprivi
Game Park (fifty kilometres to the north) or to the Mamili Game
Park (sixty kilometres to the south). These expeditions require
two vehicles and nights are spent camping in the bush.
At Mamili Game Park, chances are you won’t be coming into
other vehicles, as it is wild and remote. Our priority is for you
to encounter wildlife!
TRADITIONNAL VILLAGE
Just next door to Camp Kwando is the village where most of our staff
comes from. The villagers have created a Traditional Village where
they will present you various fishing and hunting techniques, as
well as their traditions on their every day life. Most of it has
been protected for the last centuries. During this visit, the Medicine
Man of the village will show you how different dances were used
against various illnesses or to cure other problems !
VILLAGES SCHOOLS
We also organise visits to the two local schools bordering the lodge.
Our main impetus is on the quality of teaching, and that it be maintained
at an adequate level. Thus our concern that all the money you pay
for these visits is re-injected in schooling material. This projet
is monitored by us, and we track all donations.
FISHING
Fishing tackle will allow a party of four on request to go fishing
on the Kwando river. Several species shall suit your palate and
our Chef shall be delighted to prepare the catch of the day. For
the more adventurous angler, the Tiger Fish, which trophies weighing
up to eight pounds, have been caught in our waters, no doubt a challenging
catch.
PLANE
During high season (may to november) we operate an aircraft at the
lodge in order to allow our clients to visit the area from the sky.
You can book scenic flights of twenty or fourty minutes or even
more. As well, we can operate transfer flights to the various local
airports (Katima Mulilo, Livingstone, Maun or Kasane).
Our Cessna 206 can comfortably take up to five passengers an dis
operated by our professional pilot. The rates are available on request.
TRIPS TO MAMILI
The Camp's proximity to the Mamili National Park, famous for its
wilderness, allows us to organise field trips in order for you to
get a taste of the real bush life. Three days excursions in the
Park will allow you to travel back in time and experience a truly
exceptional adventure. Two vehicles and the appropriate staff will
allow parties of up to six guests to travel to the Park.
On the first morning, upon reaching the camp site, you will enjoy
a first game drive and come back in time for lunch. Though rather
basic, the camp will have such amenities as a shower as well as
movable toilets. Following a rest during the warmest hours of the
day, in the shade of large trees at campsite, off you go to another
game drive followed by a solid dinner and a comfortable night is
spacious tents which will have been installed for you.
More game drives and the usual camp activities on the second day,
night camping in the bush and an early game drive on the third day
followed by lunch and a final two hours drive home to the lodge.
Day Trips to Victoria Falls
Having our own plane at the lodge, we are able to offer day trips
Victoria Falls (locally known as "Vic Falls"). Should
you not feel comfortable with the idea of a long and rather tedious
trip by land, along with a border crossing which may add on to a
hazardous journey, our Cessna 206 will carry you there with ease
in a flight of no more than 90 minutes. The flight for four passengers
will take you to Livingstone in Zambia, where a car shall bring
you to the Falls, much wilder on the Zambian side than on the Zimbabwean
side.
A luncheon shall be served, followed if requested by a couple
of relaxing hours at the pool of one of the Livingstone hotels.
Your driver will drop you at the airport later in the afternoon
for a fascinating flight home to camp.
