Etosha
Etosha National Park is one of Southern Africa’s
finest and most important Game Reserves, which was declared a National
Park in 1907. The park covers an area of 22 270 km² and is
home to 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species,
16 amphibian species and one species of fish.
Africa’s largest salt pan, at 4731 square km, forms the centre
piece of the park. A chain of natural springs have become the catalyst
for the daily interaction between species which has thrilled and
fascinated visitors since 1907. The Etosha National Park covers
a vast area which has been protected since German colonial rule
and is now one of the most productive game viewing parks in Africa.
Once a lake the size of Holland it now shimmers with a glaring bright
white from crystallized salt across its entire surface.
The park is justifiably famed for the wealth of wildlife –
114 mammal species,340 bird species,110 reptile species, 16 amphibian
species and one species of fish – that congregate at its dozens
of waterholes, offering ample reward for those who are patient.
Plains game such as zebra, kudu, oryx, wildebeest, giraffe, springbok,
impala and eland abound in great numbers on the grasslands while
large herds of elephants are common. Lions dominate the predator
food chain and make good use of the waterholes as hunting grounds
whilst smaller predators like the black-backed jackal trot around
oblivious to humans.
The demand for fresh drinking water means that there is little
hierarchy at the waterholes and the diversity of species drinking
at the same time can be staggering. This is the place to watch Namibia’s
greatest daily wildlife dramas unfold.
A San legend, depicting the formation of the Etosha Pan tells of
how a village was raised and everyone but the women slaughtered.
One woman was so distraught about the death of her family she cried
until her tears formed a massive lake. When the lake dried up nothing
was left apart from a huge white pan.
On our game drives guests experience a fascinating perspective
of wildlife in Etosha. Our vehicles have an all wheater safety design
for the wet and dry season- they offer a 360 degree open-air unobstructed
view – optimal height for visibility in spacious and comfortable
atmosphere – up-to-date game movement information and thereby
a high success rate in game spotting.
A Brief History of Mushara
The Pampe family were cattle farmers in the eastern side of Namibia
and had a game farm on the eastern side of Etosha which was not
utilized on any commercial scale. The idea to build a lodge came
into being in September 1996. The close proximity of the farm to
the Etosha National Park was the main reason for that. Building
commenced during May 1997 and in May 1998 the lodge opened its doors.
As the Mushara Lodge got popular and sought after by guests, the
idea to expand was born.
Instead of adding beds to the original Mushara Lodge and loosing
its character it was decided to build a second lodge – The
Mushara Outpost, which was build during 2007 and opened in November
2007. The latest expansion happened in 2009 with the building of
the Mushara Bush Camp.
The Mushara Family
Marc and Mariza Pampe’s home is an oasis of hospitality on
the edge of the Etosha National Park, Namibia’s leading big
game destination. The Mushara Collection represents the only family
run properties in Eastern Etosha and offer a diverse collection
of accommodation ranging from the stylish and child-friendly Bush
Camp to the supreme luxury of the Villas. Everything that Marc and
Mariza have achieved is infused with their passion for an excellent
guest experience and the very highest standards of service.
