Gross Barmen Hot Springs Resort is nestled on
the banks of a tributary of the Swakop River only 100kms from Windhoek,
and 25kms from the town of Okahandja.
Not only is it a great stopover for self-drive travellers on the
way to the coast, or further north to Etosha National Park, it is
also within easy reach for weekend or day trips from the capital.
Originally the site was an early Rhenish mission station, established
in 1844, of which the ruins can still be seen.
The missionaries gave the station it's name Gross Barmen, having
previously been called Otjikango Otjinene - Herero for large fountain.

by the air temperature) is usually between 25 and 29deg C during
the day.
As the water bubbles from the earth at a temperature of 65deg C,
and then cooling off to 40 deg C for the thermal bath, the Gross
Barmen Hot Springs advises those with heart or kidney problems,
to use the periods of therapy in the hot water in moderation, as
it could have adverse effects.
The water in the children's splash pool is lukewarm.
Activities
The main attraction of the resort, (open throughout the year) is
its hot mineral spring water.
These waters have proved to be of great benefit to visitors with
rheumatic and related ailments over the years.
Guests receive a healthy glow after sensible and balanced sessions
in either the large indoor thermal bath, the open-air swimming pool,
or in the private baths.
Attraction
The main attraction at Gross Barmen is the strong mineral spring
with its revitalising and health-giving water.
The main feature at the resort is the large indoor thermal pool.
Camera's, bird books and binoculars should be packed, as it is also
a bird watchers paradise; the large dam with its reeds, attracts
more than 150 different species.
Visitors are asked to note that the birds should not be disturbed,
and angling is not permitted at the dam.
Gross Barmen is a very popular, relaxing and refreshing destination.
The nearby Von Bach Dam, outside of Okahandja, is also a favourite
spot for water sport enthusiasts and anglers, with it's attractive
picnic spots and fishing sites along the banks of the dam.
Location
Situated less than 100km from Windhoek on the main route
to the north as well as Namibia's coastal region, this resort is
a convenient stopover for tourists.
