The Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge is one of Namibia’s most unusual
desert lodges, featuring uniquely structured semi-subterranean rock
igloos designed to have minimal visual and ecological impact on the
landscape. The lodge is built on the slope of a hill overlooking the
Rostock Mountain range and the colourful dune landscape of the Namib
          Desert.
Renowned architect Mr. Piet Odendaal designed these unique round structures
to blend into the granite surroundings. An often asked question is:
"Why round?" The shape provides an African flair, eliminates
the need for a roof structure (as seasonal twisters are not uncommon
in this region), and creates a "cave feeling" that makes guests
feel secure in the wilderness of Namibia.

The Farm
The farm "Rostock South" lies west of the large escarpment in the eastern region of the Namib Desert. Rainfall averages less than 100 mm per year, causing rivers to run periodically. The Gaub River streams westwards and joins the larger Kuiseb in the rocky Namib Naukluft Park. Small fountains and rock pools are found in the riverbeds of the Gaub, Rotberg, and Witberg river courses, with seasonal grass and perennial shrubs common. Larger trees, mainly Acacias, occur in the riverbeds.
In the southeast rises the Witberg (white mountain), named for its white and weather-resistant marble that forms the mountain ridge. Rotstock Mountain (red gneiss) borders the farm on the northern side and features our own "Aijas Rock" in the desert. A cave with Bushman paintings is found here, with rock paintings still in relatively good condition and approximately 1000 years old.
