Things to see
- Big Daddy Dune - At approximately 325 meters high,
this is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area (besides Dune 7 which
is the highest in the Namib Desert at approximately 388 meters high),
situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.
- Deadvlei - Deadvlei is a clay pan close to Sossusvlei
characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white
pan floor
- Dune 45 - Named for its proximity to Sesriem Gate,
the dune is situated 45 km from the gate along a paved road and is easily
reached using a 2x4 vehicle.
- Hiddenvlei - Situated just a 2 km walk from the end
of the 2x4 track on a route marked with polls, this vlei is the least
visited of all the vleis letting those who make the journey enjoy some
solitude in the majestic desert surroundings.
- Sesriem Canyon - The canyon is located approximately
4.5 km from the entrance gate of the Namib Naukluft National Park. The
Tsauchab River has shaped this Canyon over millions of years and it is
one of the few places in the area that holds water all year round.
- Solitaire - A tiny settlement approximately 83 km north
of Sesriem Gate, with a filling station, a small shop, accommodation and
Big Moose’s Bakery.
- Sossusvlei - 15 km along the paved road from Dune 45
there is a general parking area. You will need to travel a further 5 km
along a sandy 4x4 track in order to reach Sossusvlei.
- Desert Adapted wildlife - The animals have evolved
incredible characteristics in order to survive in the extreme Namib Desert.
You can encounter animals like, but not limited too, beetles, spiders,
reptiles such as geckos, ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyena, brown
hyena, bat-eared fox, black backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf.
- Flora - Camelthorn trees are dotted around the desert,
usually along underground water systems. Another plant you are likely
to see close to Sossusvlei are Nara Melons. The fascinating Welwitschia
plant is only found in the Namib Desert.
